Heart of Eden Development Trust

The Articles and Memorandum of the Company formally set out a list of activities that the organisation will pursue to improve the well being of the communities comprising parishes around Appleby-in-Westmorland. These communities are Appleby, Asby, Bandleyside, Bolton, Dufton, Kirkby Thore, Long Marton, Milburn, Murton, Temple Sowerby. A map of the area is below.

The area is one of the most rural in England having a low population density distributed as villages about the market town of Appleby and individual farmsteads. Beautiful countryside comprising rolling valley land and extensive areas of moorland on the Pennines to the east

Sustainable Energy Eden

Activities for the Trust to pursue were agreed following a two year consultation period in the Heart of Eden parishes and are set out in the Heart of Eden Community Plan. These embrace a number of Action Plan themes that are being developed:

- Development of Employment and Tourism opportunities

- Improving transport and access in the area

- Developing Health and Well being in the local community

- Facilities for Children and Young People

- Housing provision, especially for young and old

     - Strengthening communities

     - Environment protection
